Parent Taught Behind the Wheel

Hi parents, My name is Parker Nettle and I wanted to inform people about what to do when your child is ready for the behind the wheel training/in-car training.

In-Car Training Options

Option 1 – Parent Taught Training – This option is available to all parents who meet the qualifications of the state of Texas. These qualifications are very simple and are listed on the DL-92 form that you will need to send to Austin for registration. Most parents will choose this method because of the ease, flexibility and cost. How to sign up for Parent Taught In-Car Training:

Step 1 – Fill out the DL-92 registration form. This form is available at this link: DL-92 Form

You will fill out this form, send it along with a $20 check to the address on the top left. You will receive a packet from the DPS in approximately 3 weeks. If you choose this method, it would be a good idea to take this step as soon as the student begins taking the AISD course. The course is a 12-week course and if you are able to get the packet prior to the course completion, you would be eligible to get a learner’s permit the day the student receives the certificate of completion.Remember, the student must be at least 15 years of age, and must have successfully completed the entire course before being eligible for the learner’s permit. The student will then have to hold the learner’s permit for 6 months and be 16 years of age in order to be eligible for the driver license.During this 6-month period, the parent will teach the in-car portion. Step 2 – Order an approved Parent Taught course. The state now requires all parents to utilize an approved course, even to teach the in-car portion. There are many good courses available.Virtual Drive of Texas is the course developer and facilitator for the AISD Driver Ed program.Virtual Drive offers a special to parents who are participating in the TXVSN/AISD program. For $29.95 you may order the parent training portion. This will allow the parent to take an abbreviated version of the course their student is taking. It will allow the parent to develop the skills and knowledge to teach consistent methods and techniques that the course has taught the student. Most importantly, it will provide the necessary state required documentation that will allow the student to get their license when it is time to do so without a hassle from the DPS. To order the Texas In-Car Training course through Virtual Drive of Texas you can click on this link: http://www.virtualdriveoftexas.com/incaronly.html You will click on the “Order Now” button on the top left and complete the transaction. You will then be provided a username and password that will allow you to begin the course. You will also see a link to click for the additional video that will prepare the student to take the mandatory driving test. We have worked with a 30 year veteran of the DPS to produce this video. For an additional $10 your student can see exactly what to expect during their driving test. Benefits of Parent Taught through Virtual Drive Cost:If you select the Virtual Drive program the entire cost to the parent/student would be $49.95.This is $20 to the state to enroll in the parent taught program and the $29.95 cost of the Virtual Drive program. This is significantly lower than a professional driving school that will charge in the neighborhood of $230 to $300 for just the in-car portion.Flexibility: You have up to 6 months to complete the 34 hours of required learning.Consistent Learning: Your student will feel much more comfortable with the in-car lessons because they learned the exact methods and techniques of driving in the 56 hour classroom course. The program the parents will use was developed specifically for the AISD driver education program. Fulfillment of DPS Requirements:The most difficult part of getting a license is actually going down to the DPS station, taking the tests and making sure you have all the proper paper work. With this course, the Virtual Drive customer service hotline is available to work directly with you to make certain you have all the paperwork correct before you get there. Option 2 – Professional Driving School - See your local commercial driving school for information.
